What is E. coli infection?

E coli is a group of bacteria that normally lives in the gut of healthy people and animals. The type that lives in your GI tract usually doesn't hurt you — it even helps you digest your food. But under certain circumstances many strains (types) of E coli can make you sick. Many of the strains that cause

An E coli infection is any illness you get from strains of E coli bacteria. For example there are harmful strains of E coli that cause watery diarrhea stomach pain and other digestive symptoms (gastroenteritis) if you accidentally ingest them. These are sometimes called diarrheagenic E coli and they are often what people mean when they talk about E

Many strains of E coli cause mild infections but some strains, like those that produce Shiga toxin can cause serious illness including kidney damage. Shiga toxin-producing E coli(STEC) is most likely to cause severe illness.

Causes of E coli infection:

Many strains of E coli can cause diarrheagenic infections in your GI tract. Most cause similar symptoms like watery diarrhea but some are more serious than others. Scientists categorize them by how they attach to your cells and the types of toxins they release. Most diarrheagenic E coli strains spread through fe

You can get E coli from:

Eating undercooked meat:Ground beef, hamburgers and other meats that are not cooked thoroughly can contain E coli.

Consuming contaminated foods:This includes undercooked meat and raw fruits and vegetables that aren't washed well enough.

Drinking unpasteurized beverages:This includes milk, cider or juice (and foods made from them, like cheese or ice cream).

Drinking contaminated water(or getting it in your mouth):E coli in poop from animals and people can contaminate natural water sources (like lakes, streams and rivers), swimming pools and drinking water that is not sanitized.

Underground foods:Produce from manure-fertilized gardens, yogurt and radish, clover and alfalfa sprouts.

Other foods:Such as dried cured salami, hazelnuts and prepackaged cookie dough.

Organic harvest:A recent E. coli outbreak connected to bagged organic carrots took the internet by storm. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asked people to avoid eating them instead of throwing them away and washing any item or surface that might have come into contact with them using hot soapy water

Apart from these contact with farm animals such as cows sheep and goats can spread E coli. E coli can be spread through the oral-fecal route from person to person. You can get poop on your hands from changing diapers, wiping after a bowel movement, touching petting zoo or farm animals or sharing objects or surfaces with someone with an E coli infection

Symptoms of E coli infection: symptoms of E coli infection:

Symptoms of E coli infection:

E coli infection symptoms usually start 3–4 days after a person had contact with the bacteria and end within about a week. Most people recover completely from an E. coli infection but some can develop a serious kidney and blood problem called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

Signs of an E. coli infection include diarrhea which can be bloody or watery, severe stomach cramps and vomiting or a low fever. Signs of dehydration such as little or no peeing, very dark pee, being very thirsty, having a dry mouth or throat, feeling dizzy or lightheaded can also indicate E

Treatment of E. coli infection:

Treatment for an E coli infection depends on the type of infection and severity of symptoms:

Hydration:Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration especially if you have diarrhea or vomiting. If you can't tolerate oral intake you may need IV fluids.

Antibiotics:Antibiotics may be used to treat severe infections or infections caused by diarrheagenic E. coli other than STEC. Antibiotics include ciprofloxacin azithromycin and rifaximin however antibiotics are not recommended for most patients with diarrhea caused by E.

Antimotility agents:These agents can treat distressing symptoms but should be avoided if you have bloody diarrhea or a STEC infection. Antimotility agents can increase the risk of complications like toxic megacolon, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and neurologic
